HELP! - How to write a dissertation

Generic Dissertation Outline structured guidance framework with headings and sub headings: How to prepare to write a Dissertation

Thinking about writing your dissertation can be very stressful and very worrying for a student. What students do not realize is that actually writing the dissertation is not a difficult task as long as the preparation has been carried out thoroughly. You do not just write a dissertation, you prepare to write a dissertation and then after the preparation has been done the writing up should not be a long difficult process.

Question: - Do you realize how many hours that the university expect you to spend on a dissertation? How much of a student's time should a dissertation take to write?

Quite often the guidance from universities is that students spend between 200 - 300 hours on their dissertations at undergraduate level and 500- 600 hours at post graduate level

Therefore, your commitment to work on your dissertation for example may be:-
·         Undergraduate Level 200- 300 hours working on the dissertation at Undergraduate Level. For example if the student has 3 months to write the dissertation then approximately 3 - 5 hours per day would be expected over the three month period for work on the dissertation at Undergraduate Level.
·         Post Graduate Level 500- 600 hours working on the dissertations at Post Graduate Level. For example if the student has 3 months to write the dissertation then approximately 7- 8 hours per day would be expected over the three month period for work on the dissertation at Masters Level

Time management is essential for the research process. Leaving it all to the last minute just does not work for a dissertation!
